Does exercise equipment pose a threat to kid safety?

Mike Tyson's 4-year-old daughter was critically injured Monday. She's believed to have been playing and then got tangled on cord or rope from a treadmill. The case is being treated as an accident. MORE INFO

***UPDATE*** Tyson's daughter died Tuesday just before noon. STORY

Do you lock away exercise equipment - from the one-pound weights to the Bowflex machines - if kids are in the house? Or is this no different - in terms of safety - than other household items?

How do you talk to your kids about equipment dangers? Safety precautions?

I had a friend whose 2 year old daught got a serious burn from turning on the treadmill and falling down on it with it still running.  I think exercise equipment is very dangerous with kids in the house.

This is such a sad story.  It really breaks my heart to even imagine this happening.  We are looking into getting a treadmill so I am definitely gonna have to check everything out on it when I find one to see what exactly is gonna have to be somehow put up on it so my 2 1/2 year old doesn't get into it.

After this story though it made me look for anything that had cords hanging down, such as blinds, and put them up.

Kids find ways to get into anything they can, all we can do is try and protect them as much as we can from this stuff.

Yes, exercise equipment poses a threat to kids.  I have heard about many treadmill accidents with young children.

We had our exercise equipment in our bedroom and my daughter did not have access to it before we got rid of it.  Every time my nieces and nephews came over and they caught a glimpse of the equipment in our room, they wanted on it.  The answer was always the same "No!"  Of course i explained the dangers too.

I think it can, but more so I think it's the parent's responsibility to be watching their children and be aware of potential harm that could happen due to a lose cord hanging, which was reportedly the case with this.  Just like they advise not to put a baby crib near blinds that have the hanging cord the same applies for cases like this, cords, rope or string can be potential hazards and if you don't watch your child or inform and teach your child that they don't play with those things or even touch those things for that matter than you can more than likely expect that something harmful will happen if something is left with in their reach.  I know this probably was a case where the mother didn't even realize that child was around the treadmill or exercise machine (what ever it was) and maybe didn't even realize there was a lose cord or string/rope hanging from it ... but even while cleaning I'm always back and forth to check on my daughter .... and that's not to say she wasn't either ... it may have happened right after she walked away from checking on her who knows ...

This is the most terrible thing...to have your child hurt in your home because of something you overlooked.  Just terrible and sad.   He will feel guilty for the rest of his life, I am sure.

A few days ago, Katrina (kindahotmom) wrote an article about keeping our kids safe and whether or not if we cause damage by sheltering them too much.  I feel it such a slippery slope. You can always do things to improve safety in your house but can you accurately predict every accident?  I am not sure any of us can.  We just do the best we can and ask others for help if we think we have overlooked something.  Accidents can happen despite the best prepared plan.

Kelly had an accident with my mom's treadmill a few months ago - she turned the speed dial so high that it threw her backwards up against the wall - and just this morning, one of my friends told me that her daughter had an accident with the trendmill over the weekend (she didn't know anything about Mike Tyson's daughter's freak accident) and she had rubber burns on her arm.

I have to admit that before this terrible freak accident happened, we did laugh about Kelly's accident but not nowadays. All I can say is that thank god she didn't get seriously hurt like his daughter did. Very sad.

Instead of locking up the equipment why don't we just teach our children what is safe and unsafe.

Speaking of Katrina I just realized I haven't seen her on her in ages ... where has she been?  Is she not posting here any longer?

That is easier said then done. You can teach them all you want, but some curiosity will not stop them from getting hurt.
